Where is the Best Rehab in the World?

“Destination rehab” is a phrase coined by Cat Marnell, when writing about her experience at our rehab in Thailand.  Cat is the New York journalist famed for her intelligently written articles about her addiction, sometimes helping others struggling with similar issues.

“My two months in Thailand in treatment working with Simon as my counselor and the team was incredible: a bright star-month of hope, healing, and happiness (an emotion/emotional state that I generally–being an addict– do not authentically feel) against the backdrop of a dark, stormy sky of a drug-addicted life in New York City. I have been to four outpatient centers and three in-patient rehabs here, and the Center in Thailand was so superior in many ways. Not only did it cost much less, the treatment and experience was overwhelmingly more effective and interesting and special” Cat Marnell journalist and Author New York

Hope rehab is the best choice for treatment, do not consider anywhere else; you would miss out on so much. I know Thailand seems far away, but it’s so worth it.

Where is the Best Rehab in the World?

“Best rehab in the world” is one you most likely never heard of—they are probably modest operations well out of the way. Ironically, part of the solution for addiction is humility and a reduced ego, so the glamorous 5-star luxury resort-style rehabs go against this principle.

Also, it is an impossible claim to make by any single treatment center—that it is the “best rehab in the world”—although some are better than others, depending on many factors.

Today you will find long established commercial institutions at the top of search engines, in part enabled by their huge marketing budgets and relationships with insurance companies. It is a fact that any center hosting over twenty clients cannot provide the same level of quality that a personalized treatment program or a smaller facility offers. I believe 12 to 15 clients is an optimum size to get the group time you require, to form healthy relationships, to not be able to hide, to share the space and to not be intimidated.

Also we hear many distorted statistics about success rates and claiming to be the best rehab in the world these days on television and online from rehabs seeking to promote their “brands”—making false promises. As Mark Twain once said, “There are lies, damn lies and statistics.”

Best Rehab in the World

So what is a successful treatment outcome? Is a client getting to the end of a 28-day program? I don’t think so. Many commercial centers base their stats on this very number, so be aware. I suggest you ask what evidence they use to measure success. A fair way to do this is by monitoring graduates who stay in contact well after treatment is completed and stay abstinent for at least one year.

(At Hope, we maintain a personal interest and investment in our clients long after they leave treatment, which only a smaller center can truly claim to do. Other, larger rehabs often follow up with a phone call or two at most; we maintain personal authentic relationships with all our clients after returning home to their lives, without limitation.)

But back to the concept of “best rehab in the world.” The best rehab in the world for you depends on your needs. In this case, size truly does matter—we are confident that smaller is better. Another indisputable factor in deciding what makes the “best rehab” for you is who is working and being treated there, at a rehab you are considering, right now:  who your individual counsellor will be as well as the current client group in residence.

Other factors for best Rehab in the world include location, and of course, financial considerations.  Being in Thailand, we are able to reduce the costs significantly while maintaining extraordinarily high standards of care, accommodation and treatment. Compared to the US, for example, where comparable “luxury” rehab costs approximately $1000 per day, Hope Rehab Center Thailand costs about a quarter of this. Also our client group is multicultural, which enhances your experience.

The basic standard treatment program we use has long been accepted by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and world addiction experts. It includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and principles of the 12-step program, as well as meditation/mindfulness, fitness, and group and individual counselling.  At Hope you get a lot more than the standard program offered by most. We add many health activities and fun excursions.
