Rewrite Your Life With These Two Letters
Goodbye Addiction - Hello Recovery
Could Writing a Letter Change Your Life?
The great advantage of putting things down on paper is it can make things clearer. Normally our thoughts just bang around in our heads in snippets. This can easily lead to a distorted sense of what is going on.
It can be the same with conversations. Our words can be all jumbled up as we struggle to get our point across. This is why writing a letter to somebody can be preferable. In this format, we have time to put our thoughts in order, and create something that is a much better presentation of what we mean.
Writing a goodbye letter to addiction and a hello letter to recovery often leads to clarity. This insight can then increase our motivation and determination to change. It can also be a resource that we can turn to if we are ever in doubt about our new path.
Benefits of Writing Recovery Letters
- It makes our thinking clearer
- It often leads to insights
- It provides a healthy outlet for expressing anger, grief, or disappointment
- Treating the addiction as a "thing" that you can write a letter to increases objectivity
- Saying goodbye to our addiction provides closure
- Saying goodbye like this is empowering
- The recovery letter can be inspiring
- We can return to these letters whenever we need a reminder or motivational boost
The Goodbye Addiction Letter
It is common for those of us who became caught up in substance abuse to think of it in terms of a romance that went sour. Our relationship with the drug might well have been the most important once in our life. In fact, we may well have been willing to sacrifice almost anything for it. This is why we hung in there so long, even when it became undeniable that the relationship had turned toxic.
The goodbye addiction letter is our chance to find closure with this failed romance. Realistically, this will usually involve looking back on the good times as well as the bad. To say goodbye properly, we must recognize that the relationship is irredeemable. No promises to change or do things differently is going to save it. This needs to be clear in our goodbye letter. Any get-out clauses or maybe’s will just leave the door open to relapse.
The Hello Recovery Letter
Perhaps all world-changing endeavors begin with a vision. The hello recovery letter is an opportunity to set out our vision for the future. What is it that we want from recovery? What are the benefits we envision when we break free of addiction? It is important here to not be too specific (e.g. I want a yacht after one year), and instead focus on things like how we are in the world (e.g. comfortable in my own skin, at ease with others, and experiencing peace and joy).
The hello recovery letter is addressed to your future self. Imagine where you want this you to be when re-reading this letter in one year or five years’ time. Also, imagine a future you who needs to revisit this letter because things are rocky and there is a need for inspiration and encouragement.
It is important to be realistic in your recovery letter. There are going to be challenges that need to be faced. Progress in recovery is not linear. There will be ups and downs, but the long-term trend will be upwards so long as we are putting the effort in.
Goodbye Addiction, Hello Recovery
These two letters are going to be something you want to hang onto as a reminder of what you’ve come from and where you are going. They may even turn out to be one of the most impactful things you do in early recovery. Of course, we only get what we put in with this kind of work.
