“Having had the opportunity to have met Simon and Alon during my three and a half months of treatment, the only word that comes to mind is ‘GRATEFUL’. These wonderful people made me feel so loved and cared for during my treatment. Thanks to them I am today 6 months clean and still going strong. They didn’t give me a second chance in life, but a chance at a second life.”
Much Love, Phil
Principles of Effective Treatment Guidelines by NIDA
Scientific research over the last 50 years shows that treatment can help patients addicted to drugs stop using, avoid relapse, and successfully recover their lives. Based on this research, key principles have emerged that should form the basis of any effective treatment programs:
- Treatment needs to be readily available.
- Effective treatment attends to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her drug abuse (underlying issues).
- Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical.
- Counselling on an individual basis is beneficial.
- Group behavioural therapies are the most commonly used.
- Medications can be helpful.
- Medically assisted detoxification is only the first stage of addiction. Treatment and by itself does little to change long–term drug abuse.
- Many drug–addicted individuals also have other mental disorders.
- Treatment does not need to be voluntary to be effective.
- Drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously, as lapses during treatment do occur.
