Basically therapy is therapeutic however you get it however Online therapy has been growing in recent years, but it has exploded in 2020 amid global coronavirus lockdowns. It offers many of the benefits of face to face counselling, with a few extras on top. Here we take a look at online therapy and hopefully answer a few of the questions you might have.
Is it effective?
A key part of counselling is the therapeutic relationship – that sense of connection between counsellor and client. Is some of that not lost in online counselling?
This may come as a surprise that a number of studies have shown that online therapy can be equally as effective as face-to-face sessions.
This study found that online cognitive behavioural therapy for depression is “equally beneficial to regular face-to-face therapy”, while this study concluded online CBT is just as effective as face-to-face therapy for depression and various anxiety disorders. Another study found that “internet-based therapies for addictions are effective in achieving positive behavioral changes”.
There’s a wealth of evidence out there that it works, so give it a try and if it works for you than great, if not then at least you tried.
Starting counselling can be daunting. Doing it from your own home helps to make the whole process more comfortable and convenient.
It means that travelling to and from the session doesn’t take any extra time out of your day (depending on how big your house is).
And you don’t have to worry about bumping into anyone you know at the counselling service. Online therapy optimises privacy and convenience.
Working with a therapist from the comfort of their own home means they can be more flexible with times and bookings because they don’t have to worry about office hours.

Online connection with your counsellor is just as Intimate as being face to face. Online therapy can be particularly helpful for people who struggle with anxiety. Going to an unfamiliar place and sitting face-to-face with a stranger can be anxiety provoking. For some anxiety sufferers, doing therapy online from their own home is less intimidating and makes it easier to open up. When we talk about our feelings and problems they become less overwhelming.
