Spring Clean Time - For A Fresh Start in 2023
“I can see clearly now the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright, bright, sunshiny day”

Time of Renewal - Bringing and End to Addiction
Spring is a time of hope and renewal. We are leaving the long dark days of winter behind us, and there are signs of a brighter future. Change is in the air, so this can be perfect time to make some adjustments or embark on a brand new chapter in our life. This is particularly needed if our life has been blighted by addiction.
Is It Time For a Fresh Start?
Are you happy with the direction your life has been going in? Or, do you feel stuck? Are you concerned that drug use (e.g. alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, or heroin) may be preventing you from living life to the fullest? Do you suspect that there is a better life just out there waiting for you to discover it?
When things feels tough, it is often a sign that we have somehow lost our way in life. We are not talking here about the occasional bad day (the ups and downs in are to be expected), but a downward trend that we just don’t seem to be able to escape. This deterioration should set alarm bells ringing, telling us that we have gone off track, but if we are caught up in addiction, we may be in denial about the extent of our difficulties.
Are You OK for the Same Things to Keep Happening To You?
There is an oft repeated saying in recovery circles, “if you keep on doing the same things, the same things will keep happening to you”. What this is referring to is that we can’t expect our life to change in a meaningful way if we continue with the behaviors that reinforce our current relationship with life. In other words, it is highly unlikely that our life will improve in a sustainable way while we still engage in substance abuse or other maladaptive behavior.
Another thing we like to talk about in recovery is ‘hitting rock bottom’. This term is often misunderstood to mean that we need to lose everything in order to change. It is true that some of us will lose a lot before we become willing to break free of addiction, but it doesn’t have to be like that. All rock bottom really means is that we decide ‘enough is enough’. It is like an elevator descending down into hell, it is up to us to decide when to get off

It’s been a long, cold lonely winter.
Little darling,
It feels like years since it’s been here.
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun”

Spring Clean - Time For Your New Beginning
The idea of a new beginning can be scary. The self-hatred that is often a symptom of addiction may even try to convince us that our current way of living is as good as it gets. It is vital that we don’t listen to this negative voice that is trying to keep us stuck in a downward spiral. Sunnier days are ahead, but only if we have the courage to commit to change, and if we are willing to get the support we need to make these changes.
