Severe Shortage of Rehabs in Ireland
Ireland has the third-highest death rate from drug use in the whole of Europe, and the only countries worse than us would be Estonia and Norway (source Journal.ie). Up until a couple of decades ago, heroin addiction was mostly confined to the larger cities like Dublin but now it is a problem even in the rural areas. More worrying still, a representative from Health Service Executive (HSE) admitted that there are parts of the country where there are no treatment options available (source: Vice).

Addiction is a huge problems in Irish society, but the help is often not there for those of us who are ready to change. Inpatient treatment offers the best hope of recovery, yet options when it comes to rehabs in Ireland are appallingly limited. There is a ‘chronic shortage’ of beds available for those who need a supervised detox – a report by the HSE Working Group on Residential Treatment & Rehabilitation found there were only 79 beds available in hospitals and psychiatric units. There are often times when there are no rehab beds available in the whole of the country, yet the government attitude is to just continuously berate those caught up in addiction for not wanting to change.
There are some private rehabs in Ireland such as the Rutland Centre, but private treatment can cost anywhere up to €18,000 (source: The Irish Times). This is well beyond the means of most of us. The other option is to travel across the water to places like The Priory, but private treatment is expensive in the UK also.
It is doubtful that the situation in regards to rehabs in Ireland is going to change anytime soon. It could mean that despite your willingness to change, the help you resources you need to begin transforming your life are not available. Luckily, there is an alternative that can provide everything you need to change.
